Long-Term Course

Tokyo – Takadanobaba Tokyo – Ikebukuro Kyoto Nagano

Enrolment is open 4 times a year
Admissions are four times a year at the Takadanobaba, Ikebukuro, and Kyoto campuses (April, July, October, and January). Nagano campus admissions are twice a year in April and October.

The Academic Year begins in April
In accordance with the standard schedule of the Japanese education system, our school year generally begins in April. From April to March of the Following year comprises a school year. The following second year subsequently begins the next April to the next March.

Class teacher system
There is a homeroom teacher for each class, so students can always consult with them in regards to problems related to learning and school life. Each school has a special area for consultation, so you can feel security in your personal conversations.

Full career support
If you enroll from the beginner level, your personal teacher will provide an individual interview in October of the first year (intermediate and above levels may begin immediately). Following this, you can receive regular career guidance meetings every three months. In addition to regular interviews, you can also apply for interviews with your teacher at any time you feel it necessary. Each campus also has a career advisor who specializes in career guidance. In cooperation with your teachers, we will do our utmost to support students who hope to go on to higher education as well as those who wish to work.

Elective classes to meet your needs
From intermediate level II, elective classes are offered twice a week (90 minutes). You may choose classes to meet your career and learning objectives after graduation from graduate school, EJU exam preparation (university / vocational school advancement), JLPT exam preparation, conversation, and employment options.
You may select classes based on your individual learning objectives following graduation. Select classes to prepare for university entrance exam, the JLPT exam, to build conversation skills, or for career preparation.
You can choose classes according to your career and learning objectives after graduation from graduate school, EJU exam preparation (university / vocational school advancement), JLPT exam preparation, conversation, and employment options. Gain practical content to help you achieve your goals. For more details, please review the “Elective Classes” section below.

The Takadanobaba Campus offers a special advanced class for those students seeking entrance to universities which are typically difficult to gain admittance.

Upon completion of elementary level class, students may take a placement exam for entrance to these special classes. Please note that students who enrolled in January are not eligible.

Graduate School Pathway Class

Tokyo – Takadanobaba Kyoto

Prepares students in writing research proposals and short theses that are required when applying to graduate schools in Japan.

Requirements for enrollment:
Must have graduated from a university from the student’s home country, Must be eligible to apply to graduate school.

EJU Preparation Class

Prepares students in using academic Japanese and studying for the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students) which is required when applying to universities in Japan.

Requirements for enrollment:
Must have graduated from high school as part of a 12 year education system.

JLPT Preparation Class

Focuses on problems that are likely to appear in the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) or problems that have been previously used on the JLPT. Practice tests are administered before the actual JLPT.

Requirements for enrollment:
Students who aim to pass the N1 or N2 (Depending on the school, N3 preparation is also offered).

Practical Conversation Class

Seeks to improve conversation skills through activities such as role-play, debate and field work.

Requirements for enrollment:
Students who want to improve their conversation skills.

Job Finding Class

Prepares students for their job search by providing practical lessons in topics such as writing resumes, practicing interviews, and improving presentation skills. There are also opportunities to go on company tours or information sessions just for ISI students.

Requirements for enrollment:
Students who satisfy the requirements for obtaining a work visa, for example, by graduating from a 4 year or 2 year university in their home country. Applicable to Intermediate III and above

Top University Preparation Class(Takadanobaba Campus only
The Top University Preparation Class offered in Takadanobaba is specially designed for students who aim to apply to the most prestigious universities in Japan.

Students who complete the Beginner I Japanese class may take the screening test to apply to the Top University Preparation Class.

Students who pass the screening test are enrolled in the said class. This Class progresses faster than the normal curriculum and also puts more weight into preparing for the EJU and university entrance exams.

Please be advised that students who are admitted in January are not eligible to apply to this class.

There are no classes on national and school holidays.
There are 2 class periods each school day. 1 class period lasts 90 minutes.
You will have class in the morning or afternoon, depending on which class you are enrolled in.
There are up to 20 students in each class.

Morning Classes: 1st period from 8:50am to 10:20am and 2nd period from 10:30am to 12:00pm
Afternoon Classes: 1st period from 1pm to 2:30pm and 2nd period from 2:40pm to 4:10pm

Class Placement Test

ISI uses an online Class Placement Test which can be accessed through a computer or smart phone. As a result, you can immediately check your assigned class on arrival in Japan and smoothly transition to the beginning of your school life. We will also ask you to complete a questionnaire about your past experiences in learning Japanese and your future plans, which will then be used to place you in a class that matches with your level of Japanese and learning goals. In case you feel that the assigned class does not match with your level of Japanese, we have a Class Changing Period in place, during which you can consult with faculty to change classes.

Academic Performance and Evaluation
  • Academic performance is evaluated from the results of achievement tests from texts, quizzes, homework and the final exam at the end of each term.
  • At the end of each term, you will receive a cumulative grade according to the following 5 step grading scale: A+(90~100%), A(80~89%), B(70~79%), C(60~69%), D(below 59%). Individuals can check their cumulative grade from the Student Portal Site.
Advancing Classes

If your cumulative grade is above C at the end of the term, you may advance to the next level class (Please refer to Academic Grades and Evaluation above). If your cumulative grade is D, an assignment will be given out by the school. Based on the results of this assignment and a faculty meeting, the school will decide whether you will be allowed to advance to the next level class. If your advancement is not recognized, you will be enrolled in a class of the same level as before and study the same material once more.

Graduation Requirements

If you satisfy the requirements below, your graduation in March will be recognized. If your graduation is recognized, the school will confer a Certificate of Graduation.

  • Completed 1 year or more of courses and will be enrolled in school until the following March.
  • Average attendance rate is 80% or higher.
  • Receive a grade of C or higher in all subjects upon graduation.
  • The final class level is Intermediate II or higher.

Students who do not fulfill the above requirements but hold a student visa.

  • For students whose enrollment period has expired but who satisfy the requirements below, a Certificate of Completion will be conferred.
  • Average attendance rate is 80% or higher.
  • Receive a cumulative grade of C or higher upon completion.
  • Students who are expelled during a term may request a Certificate of Past Enrollment with a fee.
  • Students who enter college or graduate school in October may request a Certificate of Enrollment with a fee.

General short term course

Can study for a minimum period of 2 weeks
The Short-Term Standard Course is a 2 weeks minimum course for those who desire to study Japanese but plan to enter Japan with a visa other than a student visa. This includes those with a working holiday visa or a spouse of a Japanese national visa who are also planning to enroll longer than 1 year. The Short-Term Standard Course delivers the same curriculum as the Long-Term Course, and is designed for those who want a solid course in Japanese.

Enrollment is open 4 times a year
For those that are absolute beginners, please enter at the beginning of any of the April, July, October and January terms. Those with experience in Japanese may enter the middle of terms as well. In this case, please take a preliminary Level Check Test so we can assign you to a class that matches with your Japanese skills.

Short-Term Practical Japanese Course

A cultural experience class unique to Kyoto
The Short-Term Practical Japanese Course is a short, intensive practical course that uses familiar topics to primarily teach conversation skills but also grammar and writing skills. As part of the course, you will learn about Japanese culture, experience Japanese culture firsthand and learn to describe what you experienced in Japanese. This is a very popular course in which you can both learn Japanese and have plenty of chances to experience Japanese culture.

small class size of 15 students
There are 15 students at most in a single class. Classes have an intimate and relaxed atmosphere between teachers and students and the small class size allows teachers to be even more attentive to individual students’ needs.

A curriculum in which you can feel yourself improve everyday
We adopt texts with a “CANDO “method and clearly set the goals of every class as ‘students will be able to do’ what they learned during that class. You should be able to feel your Japanese skills improve even if your period of learning is short.

Length of study and Class Levels

There are 3 levels of class each term: Beginner I, Beginner II and Intermediate I.The course standards for each level are as follows.

Evening Course for those who want to work in Japan and want to improve business Japanese

Those who cannot attend due to work during the day, or those who want to learn Japanese in the evening while working part-time on a working holiday visa.

This program is ideal for those who want to work in Japan and those who want to improve their business Japanese and conversation skills, such as those who want to study Japanese in the evening in addition to daytime Japanese classes to lead to employment.
You can choose from three types of lesson formats: face-to-face, online, and a hybrid of face-to-face and online.

Steps in job search support

  1. JLPT N4 or higher must be approved in December. Those who are successful will be offered for jobs.
  2. Introduction to the job / Interview: Counselors at each school will look for the type of job each student wants and, after a personalized interview, they will advise the best goal for each student
  3. This program will help you strategize and prepare for the industry specific skills assessment test.
  4. Conduct the review of specific sectors at the end of February. Those who have passed this exam (results around mid-March) will be able to apply for the Specific Sectors 1 visa, and will be supported until they obtain it. *During the visa application period, it may be necessary to temporarily return to your home country
  5. Start of work:
    – Have passed the test for specific sectors
    – Have at least the JLPT N4
    it is necessary to be able to work
